ABOUT SOMA SENDING
As the church is faithful to Christ’s mission, the Gospel moves out; it bears fruit and grows. God sends people, often to break ground in new areas where the Gospel is not yet preached. This is the hard and important work of church planting. As a family we centralize our strengths and resources to plant churches of Missional Communities together. In his essay entitled “Why Plant Churches?” Tim Keller states,
“The vigorous, continual planting of new congregations is the single most crucial strategy for 1) the numerical growth of the Body of Christ in any city, and 2) the continual corporate renewal and revival of the existing churches in a city. Nothing else–not crusades, outreach programs, para-church ministries, growing mega-churches, congregational consulting, nor church renewal processes–will have the consistent impact of dynamic, extensive church planting. This is an eyebrow raising statement. But to those who have done any study at all, it is not even controversial.”
Convinced of this fact, the Soma Family of Churches comes together around planting new churches of Missional Communities together. We do this in two ways:
Through a unique partnership with Western Seminary (based in Portland, OR), participants who meet Western’s admission requirements, and who complete all Soma Sending components, can earn Master’s-level credit, which can a) result in a Graduate Studies Certificate in Church Planting from Western Seminary, b) be applied toward a Master’s degree within Western Seminary, or c) be transferred as credit to another institution. Seminary credit adds to the cost of Soma Sending, but comes at 65% less than Western’s current tuition rate.
